The surface temperature on Venus is 462 degrees Celsius – everywhere on the planet.
On Mercury, which is the closest planet to the Sun, the surface temperature can be up to 426 degrees on the sunny side and as low as minus 137 degrees on the dark side.
The surface of Venus is hot because of the greenhouse effect. Venus's atmosphere is 96.5% carbon dioxide, which traps the heat that's emitted from the planet as it absorbs the Sun's radiation. (The other 3.5% is mainly nitrogen.)
The atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is 92 times that on Earth. It's the equivalent of being one kilometre deep in water.
Mercury has virtually no atmosphere, so it doesn't suffer from the greenhouse effect.
